Community Contribution #1

TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook, LinkedIn, instagram and many more are all social media platforms that millions of people use on a day to day basis. When using these platforms, people like, share, post, and comment which all contribute to ones presence online, therefore creating their own digital footprint with every thing they do within these apps. In a video called “What is a digital identity“ made by Eric Stoller, they mentioned social media can be a useful tool and can be looked at by employers, coaches, and agents as a “pre interview.”

Although social media hasn’t landed me any jobs or fame, I have learned to use platforms like instagram to my advantage when it comes to my basketball career. Coming from a small town where basketball is very small, it was difficult to play in front of scouts and or coaches. So oneday, I decided to post some of my highschool basketball highlights on my account, the one video landed plenty of views and coaches began to tune in and follow my account to see when I post next. With that being said, every year I would post “end of year highlights” which eventually led to me being contacted by almost every school in Usports asking if I wanted to continue my studies and play basketball on their team. Obviously I decided on Uvic, and I coudldnt be happier with my decision.

With the amount of success and opportunities I’ve had over the years of playing basketball, my digital footprint is still always there representing me in the social media world. Knowing this makes me be that much more careful of how I use it when it comes to posting, liking, commenting, and sharing things online. One mistake can take a tole on my image which can prevent other employers, coaches, and agents looking at me in a positive way.
